Our February program will be presented by Eric Oszustowicz. Eric’s slide presentation will include July 2009 views of the Alaska Railroad in addition to views from 1998 and 2003. Also included in the presentation will be views of the New York area during 2009 covering the subway system, commuter lines and surface transportation. Photography from the 1984 to 1989 era showing the evolution of the graffiti-free program on the NY subway system will also be included. Finally, Eric will show scenes of western U.S. and Canadian railroads from 2009.

From 1998 to 2009, the Alaska Railroad experienced a transition from the use of late 20th century locomotives to the use of mostly ultra-modern 21st century locomotives. Eric visited Alaska in 1998, 2003, and 2009, so we will see photographic evidence of this transition. The Alaska Railroad’s passenger equipment is also top notch, as we will see. Of course, the spectacular scenery of Alaska provides a first-class backdrop for photographers. The railroad will be covered end to end, showing virtually every possible, reasonably accessible vantage point.

2009 saw continuing change on the New York subway system due to the arrival of more R160s. Another transition took place from 1984 through 1989 with the graffiti-free program on the NY subway, which changed the system — and arguably the city as a whole — for the better. We will see photography showing these changes in both eras in addition to 2009 views of other NYC-area transportation such as the Metro North commuter system.

We will also see the photographic results of Eric’s 2009 road trips in the western U.S. and Canada, which include views of freight and passenger operations on various railroads.

As one can see, Eric’s presentation is quite diverse, covering a wide variety of operations over different periods in history. For those who have not seen his previous presentations, which included Alaska views, you will be in for a pleasant surprise. For those who have, there will be an emphasis on the newest equipment not previously seen. NY subway fans will also enjoy this presentation. Since Eric’s presentations are long, we will start the presentation on time, so please arrive early. Please join us for an interesting evening.
