PATH Harrison Shop Tour Return Visit
Saturday, October 16, 2010
The October 16 tour of the PATH Harrison facility sold out several weeks beforehand, with a maximum of 40 permitted by PATH. We boarded a WTC-bound train and exited at the “employees only” platform at the Harrison Shop, escorted by our friend and contact at PATH. Parked alongside the shops on the mainline track were two Metro-North MDCs which could be photographed quite well from the group’s location, and parked near the shop were recently delivered PA-5s, including car 5723, which was in the process of being checked over by workers (door interlocking, etc.).
Our group then entered the shop, where our PATH host answered questions and plenty of photos could be taken. While most of the cars were PA-5s, there were a few of the PA-1 and 2 cars in the shop. After we exited the shops, we were escorted to a platform that allowed entry to the PA-5 train that was in the process of being tested, and we were allowed to take pictures (car 5721).
We then boarded a WTC-bound train and exited at Journal Square. Our host departed here, but he went to the control center to advise the Port Authority Police that we would be at the Harrison station to take photos. This worked out well and no problems were encountered.
All those in attendance had a great time. We were sorry we had to turn some people down, but due to the great response to this trip, we are hoping we can arrange a similar trip with PATH for early 2011.
The NY Division of the ERA, is pleased to announce a visit to PATH’s train shop in Harrison, N.J., on Saturday, October 16, 2010. We felt that a return visit two years after our last trip would be appreciated by many of you, particularly due to the current mix of old cars and new PA-5 equipment.
All attendees will meet at Newark Penn Station no later than 10:45 AM that morning. More specifically, you should be at the main turnstiles that lead from the track 1 platform onto the platform from which PATH trains depart to World Trade Center. A Division member, most likely Sid Keyles, will be there to provide you with paid access through those turnstiles. We will all board, as a group, the first car of a regular service train which will drop us off at the employee stop for the Harrison Shop. In anticipation of the need for security clearance for all attendees, please make certain to have a photo ID in your possession.
It is expected that the visit and tour will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. One or more representatives from PATH will be our hosts to point out interesting features of the Shop and its various subdivisions. Before the current delivery of the PA-5 cars, PATH had 327 PA-1 through PA-4 cars on its roster, the earliest dating from 1965. See how these cars are kept in good repair.
Ticket Price: $20 Per Person
Join us for a very special visit and tour of this maintenance facility. The ticket price for the visit and tour is only $20. Note that there is a capacity limit of 40 people on this tour. Order your tickets as soon as possible, as only the first 40 members responding will be accepted for this trip.
After the tour, we expect to be able to conduct an optional excursion. A PATH employee will accompany us from the Shop to the Harrison PATH Station, where we will have 30-45 minutes to photograph Amtrak and NJ Transit trains passing by. Any fares involving this option will be at your expense. For further updates and information, please call 201-684-9408. This trip operates rain or shine.
