The presenter of our December meeting will be ERA Program Chairman Andrew Grahl. Andrew has a wonderful slideshow planned covering metro area updates, his southern roadtrip, opening day on Detroit’s QLINE streetcar, Canada’s 150th Anniversary, and a rare batch of Kodachrome slides taken around NYC in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. Please join us for a special end-of-year holiday treat. With such a diverse and entertaining array of subjects, there is no excuse for not being there!
Bernard Linder (Bernie to his many friends) passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. Bernie was a truly decent human being and his passing was a great loss to all of us. Most ERA members know him through his hundreds of articles that appeared in each edition of the ERA’s monthly Bulletin during the 37 years he was editor-in-chief. Others lucky enough to know Bernie personally also knew him as a true gentleman who was always willing to share his knowledge. He was 99.
Gary Grahl, whose Super 8 movie nights have become an annual tradition, will be the presenter of our November meeting. Tonight’s show, “The Return of the Streetcar,” will feature films taken by himself and his son Andrew of some of the new streetcar, light rail, and heritage trolley systems that have returned to the American public transit scene in recent years. Please join us for a wonderful presentation!
The presenter at our October meeting will be ERA First Vice President (and Headlights Associate Editor) John Pappas. John will take us on a road trip to the Midwest. Along the way, we’ll visit the Detroit Q-Line, Kansas City Streetcar, St. Louis Delmar Loop, Cincinnati Streetcar and more. Come join us for an interesting evening.
The Electric Railroaders Association is pleased to announce an exciting three-day weekend tour from Saturday, October 14 through Monday, October 16. We will visit the Rockhill Trolley Museum, The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, the Port Authority Transit South Hills maintenance yard and end the tour with dinner at the famous Shady Maple Smorgasbord in Pennsylvania Dutch country. We look forward to seeing you there!
Join us this September 15 as Paul Gawkowski presents a fantastic digital slideshow covering Amtrak’s Southwest Chief (Los Angeles-Albuquerque) and Crescent (New York-New Orleans), the New Mexico RailRunner, and light rail and streetcars in the south and southwest including New Orleans, Tucson, Phoenix, and Los Angeles’ LRT extensions to Santa Monica and the Foothills — plus a few surprises.
Join us as the ERA concludes the summer with a scenic day trip through New Jersey to visit the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians Museum and take a ride along the Delaware River on a steam train. At lunch time, we will dine in the open-platform Blue Comet dining car at the Clinton Station Diner, home of the astonishing 50-pound Mt. Olympus Burger. After lunch, we will visit the restored Phillipsburg Union Station and view the restoration of Public Service Car 2651. We look forward to seeing you there!

The ERA is pleased to announce a guided visit of the NYC Transit 207th Street Yard and Heavy Maintenance Shop in Inwood. General Superintendent Rose Duff and Superintendent Billy Allcot of NYC Transit will be our hosts to point out all of the interesting features of the shop. We look forward to seeing you there!
The 2017 ERA Annual Convention is taking place in two cities, Atlanta from July 1-4 and New Orleans for July 4 and 5. Highlights of this year’s convention will include riding the new Atlanta Streetcar through the Martin Luther King historic district, a tour of the MARTA heavy rail shop, a visit to the famed Southeastern Railway Museum, and a tour of New Orleans’ comprehensive streetcar network starting with North America’s oldest railroad, the St. Charles Streetcar (1835). This is ERA’s first visit to these two dynamic metropolitan areas, making it a convention not to be missed!

Held in Atlanta on Monday, July 3, 2017, the keynote was presented by Chief Operating Officer Rich Krisak of MARTA, an avowed railfan and third time speaker at our banquets. This slideshow is a concise history of Atlanta’s past, present and future, lushly illustrated with many photographs and timelines. MARTA has made available two versions of the keynote: a PDF, as well as the original PowerPoint which includes some nifty animations on slides 19 and 35.
The ERA will kick off this summer with a day trip to two fantastic rail museums in Connecticut. We will visit the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven and the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston. We’ll conclude the day with a steam train ride on the Naugatuck Railroad over the former New Haven Railroad Naugatuck Valley Branch. We look forward to seeing you there!
Join us this June as Ron Yee presents a railfan’s tour of Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from his December 2016 visit. Ron’s digital slideshow will showcase the area’s great blend of light rail, people-mover, rapid transit and commuter rail systems that are coordinated into one mass transit service for the entire region. The presenter at our May meeting will be Nick DiBari. Nick’s digital slideshow will be a large collection of his photos from several trips he has made in the last few years, including Indiana, Cleveland and Montreal. There will also be scenes from two of the great “streetcar cities,” New Orleans and Toronto. Please join us for a wonderful presentation!
The presenter at our April meeting will be Max Diamond. Max will present a combination of photos and videos that will delve into unusual reroutes, non-revenue transfers and work trains throughout the New York City Subway. Please join us for a unforgettable evening.

MNYBA welcomes fellow ERA members on a full-day trip to the famous Amherst Railway Society’s Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, Mass. This annual model railroading event spans four buildings of railroad and transportation vendors, displays and public information. Try not to miss this one!
Legendary transit photographer Jack May will be the presenter at our first meeting of 2017. Jack made two trips to Europe in 2016. His slideshow will include visits from his first trip to Palermo in Sicily, Cagliari and Sassari in Sardinia, and Mt. Etna. Jack’s second trip centered on a Baltic Sea cruise, with a number of shore visits to cities that have trams and metros. Please join us for this interesting and informative program.
