Two Vassar students — Ruby Cramer and Tanay Tatum — take us on a tour of the Walkway Over the Hudson, the longest pedestrian bridge in the world, in Poughkeepsie.

Walkway Over the Hudson

Saturday, June 23, 2012

A group of almost 20 hearty souls participated in lovely weather, enjoying a nice trip up along the Hudson River. The group took the four-mile loop walk in leisurely fashion, finishing from Highland to Poughkeepsie on the actual walkway. Andy’s Place was the site of lunch afterwards, and all present seemed to enjoy the food and company. In a nutshell, a good time was had by all.

The ERA, with co-sponsorship by the New York Railroad Enthusiasts, is pleased to announce a riding and walking trip to Poughkeepsie on Saturday, June 23.

We will take a Metro-North Hudson Line train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., after which we will walk the 4.5 mile Loop Trail that includes walking over the Hudson River twice: first on the Mid-Hudson Bridge and then on the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park.

The walk will be followed by lunch at Andy’s Place, a local Poughkeepsie restaurant. We anticipate arriving for lunch around 1:30 PM. Andy’s Place features sandwiches, wraps, burgers and salads. The cost of lunch will be at your own expense. After lunch, we will walk back to the Poughkeepsie Railroad Station to catch a return Metro-North train to Grand Central Terminal.

Schedule

Those attending will have to meet us at Grand Central Terminal no later than 9:40 am (in time to catch the 9:50 Hudson Division train heading to Poughkeepsie). We will meet on the third car from the south end of the train (the end closest to the waiting room and ticketing area). That train is scheduled to arrive in Poughkeepsie at 11:32 AM, when we will begin our walk. Please make sure you’re in good physical shape to complete such a long walk and wear comfortable walking shoes. If things go according to schedule, we should catch the 3:22 or 3:40 PM train out of Poughkeepsie, arriving at Grand Central at either 4:56 or 5:21 PM, respectively.

Ticket Price: $40 Per Person

Join us for a very special train ride and walking experience. Please be prepared for a lot of walking. The ticket price is only $40 for this trip. The fare includes round-trip transportation on Metro-North between Grand Central and Poughkeepsie. Please write your email address legibly on the order form (PDF download below) so we can notify you if there are any changes in the arrangements detailed above. This trip operates rain or shine.
