2013 Tour of the LIRR East Side Access Project
Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were used in the East Side Access Project, one manufactured by SELI and other manufactured by Robbins. They made eight successful tunnel drives in Manhattan starting and ending at various points along the alignment. At the end of November 2009 all of the upper tunnel drives were completed and in 2011, all the Manhattan tunnels were successfully mined. Excavation to create the caverns within Grand Central Terminal were completed in early 2012.

The ERA is pleased to announce a construction tour on the Manhattan side of the Long Island Rail Road East Side Access project (MTA Capital Construction is not currently offering tours of the Queens side, nor is it offering any tours other than mid-week.)
The East Side Access project will connect the LIRR’s Main and Port Washington lines in Queens to a new LIRR terminal beneath Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project is estimated to cost at least $10.8 billion and will include 22,000 square feet of new retail space, 46 escalators and 13 elevators. Revenue service is tentatively scheduled to begin sometime between August 2019 (the original estimate) and September 2023.
This tour is limited to strictly 20 people, so if you want to participate, you need to send in your forms and money ASAP. Once 20 people have signed up, no others will be accepted. Please check our website to see whether there is still space available for this tour.
Our group will meet in the GCT stationmaster’s office at 10:15 AM. The stationmaster’s office is located under the west balcony on the main level, next to the NY Transit Museum store. In anticipation of the need for security clearance for all attendees, please make certain to have a photo ID in your possession.
Security Requirements Note
As was the case with the Coney Island tour earlier this year, MTA has instituted new security procedures for visits to its facilities by groups such as ours. We must submit a list of names of those attending, plus a signed waiver form and a copy of a photo ID (such as a driver’s license), no later than July 26th to MTA Capital Construction. You must include a name for each and every person in your party plus a signed waiver form and a copy of a photo ID with the form and money. You must submit your forms, money and photo ID as soon as possible, but it must be received no later than July 24. Please be sure to read and understand the Waiver and Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement (the “waiver form” below).
While these requirements and the timing may seem a bit onerous, we must comply to maintain the excellent relationship we have with MTA agencies in setting up visits like this one. Please get your submission in so that it is received on or before July 24. Only names approved in advance by MTA Capital Construction will be permitted on the tour. No exceptions will be made.
