Seventh Annual HBLR System Trip

Seventh Annual HBLR System Trip

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Approximately 39 people attended this trip. Despite some minor setbacks (e.g., the scheduled ferry left without us; Hudson-Bergen timetables went out the window due to single tracking in Jersey City; temporary shutdown of the PATH Newark-World Trade Center service while we were in Harrison), the trip went off very well. We caught the next ferry 20 minutes later and got back on schedule by lunch. We rode the entire HBLR trackage and our charter bus took us to the under-construction 8th Street Bayonne station. Those who joined us for the optional PATH Harrison photo shoot opportunity lucked out and rode, between Grove Street and Journal Square, the only PA-5 train running that day. Special thanks go to Ira Steinberg and Coach Tours for providing our charter bus and PATH for permitting us to take photos at Harrison.

The N.Y. Division of the ERA is pleased to announce a day trip during which we will visit and ride the NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System on Saturday, November 7, 2009. We will also view the construction progress of the newest extension now being built from 22nd Street to 8th Street in Bayonne.

All attendees will meet at the New York Waterway Ferry Terminal at West 39th Street and 12th Avenue (along the Hudson River) no later than 9:40 AM We plan to take the 9:50 am ferry to Port Imperial/Weehawken, where we can catch HBLR.

We expect to ride HBLR in its entirety in several segments and are planning a lunch break at the Newport Center Mall. Upon ending our HBLR ride at 22nd Street, we will board a charter bus, from which we will be able to view the construction progress of the extension being built to 8th Street. The charter bus will then proceed to drop the group off at one or more places, one most likely being a PATH station, so that attendees will be able to make their ways home on their own.

New York Waterway operates a free bus to the ferry terminal eastbound on West 42nd Street, southbound on Fifth Avenue and westbound on West 34th Street. This bus runs approximately every 20 minutes and you need to board it enough in advance to catch the 9:50 AM ferry. It can be flagged down at any city bus stop along the route described. See New York Waterway for more information.
